California Hot Rod Reunion.
The much anticipated 'Dunn and Reath' REFC restoration was done just in time for the Reunion. A great job by 'Wild' Al Weich.
Three drivers from the Rocky Mountain Funny Car group were at Bakersfield competing this past weekend running in Pro 7.0. Also there was 'Wild' Al Wecih. He took the restored Dunn/Reath rear engined Funny Car. Joey Steckler was the best qualifier running a 7.061 to sit #10. Jimmy Fersch ran a 7.079 was #15 and Norm ran a 7.49 best and was #35. Another Albertan was there, Reg DeForest . He ran a 7.072

In elimination's. Joey advanced to round two with a 7.073. He was defeated by Todd Ellingson on a holeshot in round two, 7.08 - 7.05.
Jimmy Fersch lost a close one in round one to Richard Phillips. Jimmy was .012 back on the tree, and broke out taking the stripe, 6.96-7.02.
Kolwich lost a close one on a holeshot as well, 7.18 - 7.15.

The final race for many of the teams will be the California Hot Rod Reunion in a couple weeks at Bakersfield. Jimmy Fersch,

Norm Kolwich and Joey Steckler will be competing in the 7.0 class. Cal will be crewing for Tim Boychuk and Al Weich will be taking down the Dunn and Reath Rear Engined Funny Car that he has painstakingly restored. Jim Dunn will be in the seat and will reportedly be doing a burnout or at least be art of the cacklefest. (It is the 50th anniversary of that car)

The final series race weekend for the Rocky Mountian teams was a small affair due to a coup;e factors. Potential bad weather, breakage for a couple of the teams and a few teams on holidays.
They ran a Chicago style race both days because there were only three cars in attendance (Norm Kolwich, Cal Tebb and Shane Reykdal). Saturday. Norm Qualified #1 and Shane qualified #2. In the finals Shane beat Norm on a holeshot.
Sunday's race again had Norm Qualifying #1 and Shane Qualifying #2 as Cal brake out on both his qualifying runs. Norm was classified the Sunday winner (Shane broke his engine on the second qualifying run and could not return for the finals) and the overall weekend champ and received the trophy and the tires.
Probably one of the most exciting things that happened on the weekend was when Cal came back for another run and ran a very nice 6.51 at 215 mph.

This past weekend at Edmonton, many teams were away with family stuff due to it being the last weekend before School was in. Norm, Joey, Ron and Shane were all out racing. I know it was more of a fun weekend deal, and Cal put some power down to the ground as he ran in the 6.50's at over 215 mph. We will log and load all the photos from the last few races over the next couple days.

Saskatoon 50th anniversary
Saskatoon was the next event and is was their HUGE 50th anniversary event. There were Jets, Pro Mods, Altereds, Fuel Altereds, Fuel Funny Cars and of course a bunch of Nostalgia Alky Funny Cars. There were two different classes that fit the funny cars (and other various race cars). They ran a 7.50 index and a 6.99 index. Eight Rocky Mountain Funny Cars were in attendance. Guess what, the Rocky Mountain Funny Car racers won both events. Cory Kincaid won the 7.50 race and Shane Reykdal won the 6.99 race. Congrats to both.
Probably the coolest trophy I have ever seen.

A huge crowd was on hand on Saturday and Sunday for the 50th.
Ron Sekura was driving the White Trash Duster.
Next weekend they compete along with the WDRL Pro Mods and Top Sportsman classes in Edmonton. It should be a wild exciting weekend.

August 13 and 14 followed Hot August Nights and it was Jimmy Fersch earning his first win in the last couple years.

The Wednesday race turned into a huge storn and was delayed until the next day and Thursday was a great day for racing. A bunch of the guys were in attendance and made a couple hits each. As usual the race is not a points event but a pure eveing of fun. The huge crowd loved it.

Cal Tebb wins the Wally at Mission Raceway over Scott Bourdin.
It was a great weekend at Mission raceway as 29 Funny Cars were competing the the largest Funny Car event in Canada. Mission's "Lucas Oil Canadian National Open".Three different groups of Funny Car were competing the weekend including 8 Nitro floppers, 11 from the NWBB/FC group and 9 from the combined Rocky Mountain Assoc and the IBAA. Originally there were two more scheduled to attend, Al Weich and Cory Kincaid but last minute issues prevented both from attending. Those is attendance includes Joey Steckler, Shane Reykdal, Cal Tebb, Norm Kolwich, Jimmy Fersch, Darrell Webb, Scott Bourdin, Cody Anstead, and Courtney Mageau. A couple teams made runs on the Friday test session including Steckler, Reykdal, Tebb, Kolwich, Anstead and Fersch . John Evanchuk, the crew chief for Fersch also made a run in order to keep his license current. Reykdal made a real nice run going 6.59/209. Kolwich and Fersch both ran in the 6.70's and Steckler went 6.89. Tebb rattled the tires as did Anstead.
Friday night most of the teams finally arrived and they were treated to a huge feast put off by Tim Nemeth's Iceman racing Nitro Funny Car team. To say it was awesome, is an understatement.
Saturday evening qualifying got underway at around 6:45 pm. As they have in the past they went up against the NW BB/FC guys in a typical US vs Canada battle. Canada and the Rocky's won the overall in the ET battle by a wide margin this year.
Call Tebb was first up and he was on a good run early. He was along side Tiki Warrior and was ahead. But around 200 feet out the car moved out of the groove and he was trying to man handle it back but the front wheels were up and had to got off the loud pedal.
Shane Reykdal was next and he ripped off a strong 6.75/203. Too quick based on the 6.80 index but still a real good tune-up run.
Jimmy Fresch went 6.76/204 , also too quick but he was real close
It was a battle of Corvette and Joey Steckler went too quick as well. See the pattern here. A 6.73 came up on the scoreboard.
Norm Kolwich was even quicker than the rest going 6.62. He was off the gass but still almost 2/10th quicker than he wanted to be.
Cody Anstead in his first race at Mission ran a 7.10/194. He would tune it up for the later run.
Scott Bourdin went 6.97 and was ready for the final session.
Darrell Webb was the closest to the number without going too quick in the first round. He went 6.87
Courtney Mageau was the final competitor, and in her first lap at MRP in a flopper she went a career best 7.02.

Darrel Webb got the number down almost perfect with a 6.801
Cal was the next closest with an easy 6.89 200.75
Cody Anstead ran a career best 6.90 to move to the #3 spot
Shane slowed a bit but was still under with a 6.75
Joey failed to run any better in the final session.

After qualifying the group decided to run a 9 car ladder. But Sunday morning Courtney could not make the call, so they were down to eight. It would have been a good idea to change the ladder around to an 8 car ladder and take away the bye runs and one extra round, but a few did not want to change the way it was set up.
Webb had a first round bye and he went 6.91 to advance.
Fersch got the single on the Mageau breakage and he made a solid run, turning the scoreboard with a 6.90. Cody Anstead defeated Steckler when Joey was late and then ran just under the 6.80 with a 6.79.
Cal Tebb defeated Kolwich when Norm had a shifter problem. I think his Corvette left in 3rd gear.
Scott Bourdin got a break against Shane Reykdal in the final pairing. Shane got a big holeshot (almost a tenth) and had the race well at hand. He crossed the final line off the gas but still ran too quick, going 6.71 at only 191.
Scott had a decent pass, going 6.90 but was real late. But he got the win.
Cal got a round two bye run and he went 6.89 matching his qualifying run.
Jimmy Fersch used a holeshot and a 6.824 to defeat the only perfect run in the class by Darrell Webb. Webb went 6.800 but was almost a tenth back on the starting line. That one had to hurt.
Scott Bourdin defeated Cody Anstead despite Cody's great .039 light. Bourdin went 6.929 to a 7.02. The margin was .o4 at the finish line.
Cal Tebb took on buddy Jimmy Fersch in the only semi final pairing. Fersch and crew chief John Evanchuk must have hopped it up a bit or the air and track got better as he crossed the finish line first but ran too quick going 6.748 on the 6.80 index.
Tebb was strong going .083 on the tree and went 6.907/198 to get the win. A 6.80-6.866 to have gotten the win for Fersch. Scott Bourdin just took the starting line green light on his bye run.
The final round would see Scott Bourdin racing for his first ever Wally while Tebb has been to a few finals over the last 10 years.
Tebb got a huge. 097 holeshot and kept out in front, extending his lead right through the finish line going 6.932 to a 7.004. He took the stripe for the Road Hammers racing team by a tenth and a half.

The weather issues on Sunday forced the semi finals and finals of elimination's to be played out later this summer. Joey is the only driver left from the Rocky teams. Darrell Webb and two Ace Altereds are also left to race for the title.

In round one, Weich, Kolwich, Reykdal and Steckler advance from the Rocky group. Sitko, Webb, Pelrine and Vanace also advanced to the second round.
Three pairs made it done track in round one of elimination's before the rain hit. They are drying the track right now and hopefully they will get a good portion done tonight. Al Weich, Norm Kolwich and Mark Vanance have all advanced.

Final qualifying in the 6.95 class at the Rocky's.
Al Weich had his act together Saturday for the 6.95 index class at the Rocky Mountain Nationals. That was a bit of a surprise but kudos to Al and his team.
Also a bit surprising was Cory Kincaid right on his heels with a 6.970. His early best was a 7.28.
To no surprise, Cal Tebb was right near the top of the heap as well. He also went 6.97 (with a 2). The next three on the ladder race in the IBAA deal and they were Cody Anstead, MArk Vanance and Troy Sitko. Joey Steckler and Jimmy Fersch rounded out the top eight in the 16 car field.

Lat week four of the Rocky Mountain guys were in Billings for their Big Sky Nationals.
The four members from the Rocky Mountain Floppers were Shane Reykdal, Norm Kolwich, Cal Tebb and Jimmy Fersch were the lucky guys chosen.
Friday racing was postponed due to extremely high winds. Saturday started out winding again but subsided enough for us to make three runs at 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00. Every pass the fans were treated with some long side by side burnouts and some close side by side runs. First pass everyone was a little tentative because of the conditions. Very high corrected altitude.
Norm ran the best that round with a 6.86 second pass. The second pass of the day everyone stepped up a bit with Shane running a 6.97 second pass. Norm was on a good pass till a broken airline slowed him down.
Jimmy was on a great run till he had some mechanical problems as well. Call ended up running the quick run of the round with a 6.78 second pass. On the final passes of the day Shane and Jimmy were up first with Shane running a 6.77 second pass and Jimmy was right there until his car got a little out of shape on the transition bump.
Cal and Norm finished off the day with both cars running strong but Cal coming out on top with the quick pass of the weekend with a 6.73 second pass. We want to thank everyone at Yellowstone Drag Strip, all the staff, and fans were awesome. We had a great time and hope to get a chance to go back there soon.

In the end it was a battle of wily veteran Joey Steckler and fourth year Altered driver Troy Sitko. In index racing visibility is crucial on the top end as he or she can make decisions whether or not to lift based on where your opponent is. The Altereds and dragster have a clear advantage in these types of races so it is important for the funny cars to be solid on the tree and have their tune-up dialed in. The Rocky floppers have has rules designed around being a drivers race with no electronics or starting line throttle assists. The rules are set up pretty soft right now trying to integrate the three groups and the IBAA series rules are similar.
The other change for the Rocky group is they have to slow down their cars to come closer to what the other two groups are normally running. So it is a lot of adjustments for the Rocky teams.
To start qualifying a couple teams had even bigger adjustments as well. Norm Kolwich was debuting a new chassis and engine combination under his Corvette. He appeared to have a magic set-up early though as he qualified #1 with a dead on 6.95.
In elimination's though, he did struggle with setting the car up for consistency. Shane Reykdal also had a new combo, but his issues were making too much horsepower and he ran too quick most of the weekend. Jimmy Fersch has a new tune-up for the 2016 season.
It is veteran Top Alky driver/owner John Evanchuk. They also struggled trying to get the car to repeat the slower 6.95 index. Joey was dialed in pretty close all weekend long and it did pay off as he did make it to the final round in the 14 car field.
Joey ran slightly too quick in the final going 6.93 on the 6.95 index. Shane and Norm both ran too quick in round one and were done early. Ron got a win in the opening round along with Joey. Ron's weekend was done in round two when he red lit.
It was a pretty good weekend five Rocky teams running in the opening weekend. The Rocky race is just a month away and Cal Tebb, Dory Kincaid, Al Weich and David Brant will likely all be in attendance representing the flopper contingent. There should be well over 16 cars competing for the 16 car field.

A couple cars are out this weekend at Castrol testing in preperation for the 2016 race season. Their first points race is the first weekend of June.
Shane Reykdal and Jimmy Fersch were heating up the slicks. Go to the facebook page for a couple vids. Jimmy has Edmonton Top Alky veteran John Evanchuk veteran tuning the car this year. He ran a 6.70 Saturday.

The race season is here, even for teams in the NW. There are a number of Alberta racers competing this weekend at the Good Vibration's March Meet, but only Joey Steckler from the Rocky Mountain Funny Cars assoc. is representing our group. He started off the event on Wednesday with a test n tune run and saw him light up the scoreboard with a 6.990. Almost a perfect test run. On Thursday in the first qualifier they detuned the car just a smidge, but it was still too fast, by a scant .001. Joey ran a 6.999 in the first qualifier. Too bad! In the second qualifier on Friday he ran a 7.13 (had no tach apparently). That put him in the #14 spot for elimination's. All they needed was that 6.99 tune-up and try and fender in the win at the stripe. Joey ran Ronny Lennon in the Barret Bantam in round one Lennon had an almost perfect light, .011 and ran a 7.05 to Joey's 7.11. It was a fun weekend that unfortunately ended a few rounds too early.

2016 will be a very exciting year for the series. All our events this year will include the IBAA. That group includes a half dozen blown alky funny cars and altereds and will likely compete with us at the Edmonton events, and possibly others. They are also welcome to be a part of our races outside of Castrol Raceway so the potential is for some large fields of tire smoking 200 mph floppers and altereds.
